Were you travelling in Business class? If not, then the FA was correct that you shouldn't use the J toilets. That is the BA policy, even if it's different on other airlines. Perhaps the tone came across badly but from the words you describe it doesn't sound an entirely unreasonable way of dealing with the situation.
