Hi All,
Just completed a three night say in a Grand Suite at Aman Tokyo and thought i'd give a quick rundown of my thoughts here. Overall, I would 1000% come back to this hotel, despite some small hiccups that i'll detail below.
Initial Thoughts - - Was met at NRT arrivals hall by Aman rep and ushered into the car. It was just two of us, so it was a BMW i7 (seems pretty standard for most transfers i've had). I appreciated the driver trying to be quick but safe, and we actually made it in 63 minutes, despite arriving during afternoon from Taipei.
- Bags were taken, and we proceeded to the 33rd floor for check in - which is where the first issue came up.
- When we were going through the check in procedure, they noted that we had booked a Grand Suite + Deluxe Suite, with the Grand Suite having a rollaway. This was wrong as we had only booked a single Grand Suite room, as I was traveling with my mother. Why they didn't do the math and figure out that we had one too many beds is beyond me, but after 15 minutes, they figured it out and brought us up to our suite.
- We were given a quick tour of the living room + bedroom and where all the switches were for the lights, etc.
- small quibble - I wish the master light button only controlled the bedroom or living room when using that switch. As it was, the master switch turned off everything in BOTH rooms, which meant that I had to turn off each light in the bedroom one by one as to not leave my mom in the dark, or wake up my mom in the morning when I got up earlier to go to the gym.
- After the tour, the attendant asked what time we had dinner reservations so they could make up the room + bring in the extra bed. We told them to come at 6:45, so we could get ready and out of the room for our dinner.
- What happened was the second issue -
- at 6:15, we got a knock on the door by housekeeping, asking what time they could come back to service the room (so the above was not passed on). Again, we told them 6:45.
- at 6:30, we got a second knock on the door by housekeeping, this time wanting to bring the extra bed in - despite us telling them to do both turndown + bed at 6:45PM.
- We let the attendant set up the bed in the living room, while my mother finished getting ready in the bedroom bathroom.
Service - - Service outside of housekeeping was great - maybe because it was the lull between New Years and Chinese New Years, but there were a few staff members who did address me by name and they knew we were residents and welcomed us back each time we came back.
- Service at breakfast was great all three mornings, with an attentive staff who remembered my preferences.
- Concierge was great in helping us recommending an omakase dinner + securing reservations last minute.
Hard Product - - Undeniable that the lobby is beautiful, as well as the ability to see Mt. Fuji from breakfast.
- Materials in the room were great, outlets worked well, coffee maker, etc., were all clean
- don't like how the king size bed is made up of two queens or twins pushed together - the reason for this is because there ends up being a little "hump" that runs down the middle of the bed, and it prevents you from really sleeping in the middle.
- again, wished the master switch was for each room only
- AC is QUIET which is a great thing and the ac was dispersed, so you don't feel the cold air hit you as soon as it turns on
- heated floors in bathroom are nice - very much appreciated at night, and especially since weather has been hovering in the mid-30s this week
Housekeeping/Front Desk -- A few more interesting thoughts - that could be improved
- Why is it that no cords were tidied at all during this trip? I don't expect it, but typically this is a standard when chargers, etc are left out from my experience. Puri, Kila, etc., always on top of it. Did not happen this trip at all
- Why is it that when I laid my bathroom amenities out, I got a mat, but my mother, who clearly is staying with me did not? Her things were left and not touched, but mine were completely organized on a mat?
- Why is it that we only got one (1) luggage tag when it was two of us? This was remedied at the end, but just an interesting note.
- Why is the room not made up while we're having breakfast downstairs for the span of two hours? - they know we're downstairs.
- Far more than usual, I saw A LOT of housekeeping running around the hallways, and they all seemed shocked when they saw us walking. They seem to come out, and not do a check of who's in the hallway, etc., and then are caught off guard when they see us following behind them. (small note, not really an issue - just speaking to attentiveness and alertness)
- There's a woman at the front desk of non-Japanese descent (seems European w/ glasses), but she saw us each day coming on/off the elevator, made eye contact, but NEVER said hello, NEVER stood up, NEVER acknowledged us. She was very cold and not a nice vibe to get in/out of the elevators at main lobby. The gentlemen downstairs and at the front entrance on the other hand, amazing, warm, polite.
- Always said "hello Mr. Rumples" but never addressed my mother.
Overall - we'll be back. They clearly are trying their best and the points above are VERY small/minor in my POV. I just thought i'd point them out for sake of breadth and clarity. The product, the service when done right, etc., are all things that will have me back. Except for the 600+ USD one way car transfer - i'll do blacklane from airport next time. (I did blacklane back to NRT). My fault as I should have looked closer at the price - but was surprised to see a one way transfer at 600+ USD. SPA was amazing as well, did a 90 Minute Swedish and can't complain one bit. The gym was amazing as well and maintained beautifully.
