I could not care less about the better deal they got, which I'm SURE is why they're trying to discard existing reservations so they can make MORE money (because existing rates at that place are already barely covering the bills I'm sure). That is not how you are supposed to do business but because everything is skewed in favor of the corporate greed and more and more customers are increasingly living full Stockholm syndrome and convincing themselves they should tolerate and accept every endlessly greedy and despicable practice hotels, airlines, etc engage in, it goes on and on. You took the bookings, now accept it and make the profit you agreed to instead of trying to (successfully trying at that because the consumer has ~ZERO real power these days) alter the terms whenever you see fit because a more favorable set of terms came along.
I kind of agree with your thoughts that consumers have become easy for corporations to
simply shoot at like fish in a barrel
See how many they wound for profit. In Real Estate I always take the highest offer as long as
I have no written signed agreement yet.In this case one has essentially entered into an agreement with a confirmed booking.
I'd be sued if I did that and said I have a higher paying customer I will void the contract now.

Customers just roll over and play dead and become passive too much of the time.
I'm an ex New Yorker and while I've certainly mellowed living the Cali lifestyle for 20 years
I am not afraid to speak up if I am being walked on!
Over the past ten years plus when booking issues came up with these kind of cancellations
they would rise above and beyond to
make things right. But that all changed sometime ago.
Now its we hope you find another accommodation have a nice day buh bye/Farewell good luck!.
