I never even considered my home insurance for liability.

And thanks for the information on car price limit. I believe for my Amex it is also $85,000, pre-tax. Still, I'll check.

Incidentally, I found that if I book on the German web site of Sixt, insurance with a relatively large deductible (EUR 1800 for the cars I was looking at) is included at a minimum. Which means that having no choice to decline, assuming the car value is below the limit, damages not covered by the rental car insurance will still be covered by Amex.

If using your personal insurance you need to be sure it includes a rider for rental cars. It’s not very expensive.

Renting in the US/Canada, at least in my experience, does not include liability. It’s an extra charge on a daily basis and does add up on longer rentals. In places like Ireland, Italy, etc, all the insurance is typically part of the package. In California, it is illegal to drive without liability insurance but the rental companies still charge extra for it.

Be careful using a rental car website from a country where you are not resident. Typically they ask your residency. If you have status attached to a master agreement, they will know where you live. Pricing is generally based on your country of residence. The reservation and pricing can change when you show up for your reservation if your residency is different than what the reservation was based on.
