BA8 HND-LHR
Just off the flight from Tokyo this afternoon. A pretty disappointing menu and not the best food I've had in Club on BA. There also seemed to be an issue with not enough meals being loaded for the cabin, which I believe was full (or very close to it).
Not the most inspiring menu (and quite repetitive), which led to some selections that I would normally avoid. But portions were ok, and service friendly and pretty swift.
Went for the seafood salad first. This was ok, had a bit of bite. But as soon as I finished I was looking at the menu to see if I should have picked something else. Still not sure what else I would have picked.
Again, another reluctant pick for my main. Went for the Grilled beef fillet. After so much decent (or better) meat in Japan, I knew this was going to dissapoint. It was fairly easy to cut into with the pretty blunt BA knife, but wholey lacking in flavour. The sauce helped with that, but vegetables were also a little lifeless. Seems so odd when you are travelling from a city was such exceptional food & flavours available so cheaply. It was of course overcooked (but I expected nothing else).
The Apple raisin tart was the highlight. Really lovely and sweet, with an orange custard of some sort. Could have eaten 3 or 4 of these. My partner went for the Green tea tiramisu. He later told me he hadn't had a dessert, I think that probably sums up what he thought of it.
The second meal service started about 2 hours before landing. Again I struggled to pick anything I really wanted.
The salmon was ok, had a bit of flavour, but the 'salad' didn't really add much, so just seemed a lot of salmon.
I avoided the prawns after the salmon overload, and regretted that decision almost immediately. The Chicken yaki noodle had pretty much no flavour, apart from the hugely overpowering pickled red ginger. It was also so mushy, like it had been steamed for a couple of hours. Again couldn't quite believe that a Tokyo kitchen had produced this. My partner picked the prawns, he was also pretty disappointed. The Mixed berry mouse was actually really nice, if pretty small. Again the highlight.
As an aside, I really can't believe how BA's caterers can make such a disaster of this. Maybe not a fair comparison, but we took 2 regional business class flights on Cathay during our time in Asia. Both were great, the steak incredible.
