This is happening across all industries. Premium customers (highest tier) used to be rewarded with exclusivity and exceptional service, but now they are being "enhanced" to go back to the public area like the rest of the folks.
For the upper-midscale properties like Marriott and Sheraton I'm not sure everyone aligns with the "have to slum it with rest of the public in the cafeteria" vibe. Many of us prefer a to be offered the option of a full, comprehensive breakfast in the hotel restaurant instead of a few token (and often dried-out) dishes in a deserted, skeleton-staffed lounge.
