It's not clear where "back" is. But I can see about 30 routes from AUS to LHR, involving one change or two. So to take one example, there is BA5060 AUS-JFK at 14:49 hrs, this is good for any JFK to LHR flight after 20:30 (it's a very easy interchange at JFK T8). and there are 4 London flights after that time. Then similarly there are connections involving ORD, CLT, BOS, even PIT. Then there are all the Iberia, Finnair, Aer Lingus options, before we consider Virgin, United, Delta... So your family certainly won't be short of options and certainly won't be stranded forever in the wrong place.
