Exactly, that is how it works. The potential renewal of your Platino status is only "checked" when it expires, after the second year, and then it is renewed if you have earned at least 6250 Elite points in the previous year (the second year of your Platino status) or 12500 Elite points in a 2-year period. You're status is
not extended by another year after your first year if you earn >6250 Elite points in that year.
