Dang. Wish I saw this thread before I just booked my LH ticket. I got auto assigned aisle seats (I always prefer window) and they want 40 euro to change them (JFK-MUC is first flight). I'll live with the aisle I suppose. Hoping the trick of being able to select seats on the return flights once you're in Europe still works.

This is my first LH ticket since the change in August 2024 where they don't allow free seat changes for *G during OLCI.

EDIT: no seat selection without fee, period. Even after arriving in Europe I am unable to select free seats anywhere in the cabin for the return. This goes against a post further above in this thread showing there was a way to get free seats on the return after landing in Europe and flying the outbound of an LH ticket. That's no longer the case. After OLCI today I'm still be asked to pay for any seats I want to move to. I got auto-assigned aisle seats yet again.
