From what I've read, it's linked to one's passport number that can be confirmed electronically at UK immigration, but curious how UA can confirm it on its end. I hope this doesn't mean the end of online check-in / BP for UK flights . . . hopefully just temporary. I realize this is an issue for all carriers, not just UA, but asking specifically for recent UA check-in experiences. Nonetheless, if there is some general UK ETA thread elsewhere to which the mods think this post should be moved, no problem. Thanks.
I have a trip to Thailand and got the same thing on Travel Ready Center - there is a thread on here somewhere with the person saying that it happens from time to time. I think one person wrote that they need to see your passport every X months or something. Not sure, maybe it's a random thing, like SSSS, just happens sometimes.

I'm chalking mine up to the fact that I changed my reservation 4 times and over the course of ~4 weeks and now flying most of the trip on non-UA metal.

Who know. The ETA and Travel Ready Center might not be related.
