But since all trains from BCN to Sevilla run through Madrid, perhaps Toledo? closer to half way. Enough to see, do for a couple days. Yes, that could be a day trip from Madrid, but if the goal is to break up the trip, seems to fit.
If the goal is to find an interesting place along the route without backtracking, then yes, I agree, Cordoba fits perfectly.
Trains to Toledo run only from Madrid, so they would take train to Madrid and then switch to another train to Toledo (which is only 30 minutes). It still breaks up the trip and I think it’s a great suggestion, just want to note that they would need to change trains.
