I’m highly doubtful United would remove paper boarding passes at large any time in the near future, especially with people of certain religions/demographics not having smartphones, but this is the airline that also closed Customer Service Centers at most stations.
Sadly, I wouldn't put it past them to get rid of paper boarding passes at the kiosks as this already seems like a major step in that direction.. Also ULCCs charge to print BPs so most people don't print.
I know this isn't the Alaska forum but I've had two issues with getting a credit on flights that having a printed boarding pass did fix. Their app has many glitches and the boarding pass disappeared a few hours after the flight. Just one reason I keep asking for printed boarding passes.
