From what I've read, it's linked to one's passport number that can be confirmed electronically at UK immigration, but curious how UA can confirm it on its end. I hope this doesn't mean the end of online check-in / BP for UK flights . . . hopefully just temporary. I realize this is an issue for all carriers, not just UA, but asking specifically for recent UA check-in experiences. Nonetheless, if there is some general UK ETA thread elsewhere to which the mods think this post should be moved, no problem. Thanks.
Curious about this myself. Flying to LHR next weekend. Received my ETA already - pretty easy. 5 minute application and approval received in 1 minute.
I imagine if there were major issues with the process, it would have been revealed already, but would be great to hear from someone that has experience.

Added: I just checked my trip info and it says I am "travel ready". Wonder if there is something else going on with your record? Did you already get your ETA?

Note it has this language as well:
