Reg 261/2004 does apply (since RUN is within the EU). To the extent that they refused to rebook you at the earliest convenience (I.e. on the EK flight), they have failed to comply with their obligations under the Reg and you could theoretically demand that they reimburse that instead of your original ticket, if that was more expensive. I suspect that it would be a major fight to get that from them, though.
