I had a 5 day trip to Albania last March and decided to spend 3 days in Durres and 2 in Tirana. On reflection I think that this was the right thing to do.

I liked the fairly free and easy way of life in Durres, with the added attractions of the ancient ruins and a town with lots of amenities, not to mention the beach.

All the places in Tirana I wanted to see were within walking distance of where I was staying (in central Tirana), so that worked out well.

I can't suggest any decent hotels as I was staying in Air B&B's (as I do), but I would recommend staying in the centre of the city, not near the airport.
