Did Dollar discover my non-existent twin brother & how did Hertz get into the mix?

Picked up a 2-day Dollar rental at LAS yesterday @ 7:34am, a Nissan Versa, with the normal $200 credit card deposit appearing on my Chase card as Dollar. All good. This was a Priceline express rental, so it did not involve any identifying renter number (Dollar Express, Hertz Gold, etc).

But later that day...
  • At 1:30pm I get a Chase CC notice of a $200 deposit, I think nothing of it, thinking it referred to the am pick-up.
  • Two (2) minutes later I get emailed a Dollar rental agreement for a Charger that someone had just picked up from Dollar @ LAS, under my name and using my credit card. Gave the space number of the car's location, etc. Different rental agreement number from my am rental. Uh, I'm alarmed...
  • I go to check my Chase account, and it shows the second $200 deposit just charged was with Hertz??? But, uh, I have no Hertz reservations and the rental agreement I had just received was for Dollar, not Hertz (and I obviously was nowhere near the LAS car rental center or the Dollar garage space yesterday afternoon).
I immediately spoke by phone to 2 Dollar representatives who were useless. I ended up driving back to the LAS car rental center (some distance away) and talked to the Dollar manager on duty. After doing whatever she was doing online and calling someone, I was advised that the 2nd Dollar rental agreement had been "closed" and the 2nd deposit would be refunded to me. I asked for a case number or something in writing that I could reference as to the action taken (should the need arise in the future), and was advised she was not authorized to give me anything in writing (???). She also said she was not told what had occurred with the second rental.

This morning (in what has to be the quickest time for a credit from a car rental company ever appearing on a renter's credit card) there was a $200 credit for the Dollar deposit (not the Hertz deposit, which I'm thinking was the manager's error)--strange as I'm not returning the Dollar rental until tomorrow. I called billing at Hertz who quickly looked up the Dollar rental number for the unauthorized rental, and was told that particular rental had been "voided", that the Hertz deposit would fall off on its own, in due course.

Color me clueless how and what occurred, and how a Hertz deposit could ever get charged in association with a Dollar rental (legitimate or not).

Here's hoping the rest of 2025 spares me and everyone on Flyertalk, any more car rental related hassles. Fat chance.
