Yes, I learnt this a few days ago at check-in. A family at the next desk had shown up around 8 minutes after check-in closed for their flight wanting to check-in and check baggage. The agent said had they checked in online, she would have easily been able to open the flight for baggage at that point. But because they hadn't checked in at all there was nothing she could do to get them on the flight.
