It's a bit roundabout, but basically it boils down to calculating how you earn RDM, and then you get PQP based off of the amount of RDM, with a pretty low cap (considering how expensive some fares can be). It's definitely apples to oranges, because I do think there are a good number of airlines that still calculate things based on mileage flown and are not entirely revenue-based like UA is.
