We aren’t so interested in the benefits but more a case of caring about upcoming flights and whether those SP will go towards the maintenance of Silver or be “wasted” during the Tier upgrade process.
The excess points on the flight that moves you to silver. Will not count towards to retaining silver. (Though will still be consider for the rolling year for gold)

Any subsequent points will go towards retaining silver.

If because of partner flights and things posting out of order I have in the past got them to reorder things, when it was in me benefit to do so. Did this for my first obtaining of elite.
