40 mins is tight but completely do-able at DFW, thousands of people make that connection every day without issues. All gates are within about 15 mins of each other using the Skylink train.
As always keep in mind AA pads its schedules, so if you're on-time leaving SFO you will most likely arrive 10-20 mins early into DFW.
I had a 40 min connection on my last trip through DFW this past summer (RDU-DFW-DEN). First flight departed 30 mins late but I still made the connection, including having to take the Skylink 3 stops over from C to A.
