However I may have found a work around to get some of the benefits of gold/emerald with BA. I booked all the seats I wanted, including front row on club Europe short haul for extra leg room. I have kept those seats when I switched so I think this seems to be a viable way to get free and blocked off seats then switch your FF number.

I think with my gold card I can still get the benefits of checkin and lounges. I was flying QR from Rome but the QR lounge was full so I just went to the BA lounge that was empty. So I think it can work.
Which cabin were you in from Rome? You can use different oneworld lounges when flying in a suitable cabin (E.g. J or F) but I think the question earlier was how you can utilise your oneworld benefits (such as lounge access) when flying in Y, for example.
