I already had a lot of Citi cards such as multiple Preferreds, Premiers, Rewards+s, Double Cash sitting in sock drawer and collecting dust, so I converted them all to Custom Cashes. I never applied for a single Custom Cash card.
maybe some of us are just unlucky with citi. nowadays i bring my card with me because citi once blocked my card from using apple pay for fraud although all my transactions were at my usual spots and usual amounts. i also remember a few times where i wanted to check how much my grocery spend is (my wife has the bad habit of not taking receipts or discarding them immediately), but the transaction didnt show up immediately on apple pay. in addition, i also often get fraud alerts for no apparent reason, so im not too big on citi.
personally, and for most people, i see more value in holding a double cash and rewards+ card. i use custom cash for groceries and dining, which i believe is what most people do. i barely spend anything in the other categories, so any extra points is negligible. i do spend a lot on travel, but with a monthly cap of $500, custom cash is pretty much useless to me. a double cash is useful for 2x general spend. there are a few reasons such as you are in the citi ecosystem or you dont own a VX. a rewards+ card give you additional 10% points back. i also use it at dollar tree, so that's 10 points for $1+.
and you are talking from an end result point of view. the process of getting multiple custom card is long and difficult, just so i can get a few more points? all things considered, i think most people are better served getting a SUB than the 5x citi typ.
