If you are top tier/invite tier, sure, I believe you'll be more bound to an airline as you'll purchase them without price shopping. For the majority of fliers, it's not sentiment/emotions, rather cost and schedule. FT is a different breed of travelers that doesn't represent the general public.
We can make a friendly wager 25 pounds to the charity of choice to see what happens in 2027-2028 for the BAC program. My personal opinion is that people will end up spending more money to chase status with BA, rather than BA being a loser in this change; as you you mentioned, its consumer psychology and its hard to change consumer behavior.

However, the papers attached implied less loyalty unless differential services are provided such as free wifi on flights for members. The papers stated that post covid the public are more likely to move their loyalty than precovid. These changes maybe a good time to move away from BAEC!
