Travel to Japan has blown up the past couple years. I'm not terribly surprised by the corresponding hotel price hikes - most people like familiarity and will pay extra for a western branded hotel they've heard of. There are plenty of japanese hotels for reasonable prices if one is willing to forgo the points, etc. My favorite to date is the Park Hotel near the Conrad. If I wasn't burning points, that's where I'd be staying.
