The official policy is they are non-refundable. There are reports of some people getting credits and some getting actual refunds. But again that seems to be against policy and is really just luck. So, if keeping the $1K upgrade it’s important I’d suggest leaving things as-is unless you’re willing to gamble a bit.
They changed the policy awhile ago so that if you change/cancel flight before 24 hour check-in window you are eligible for an eCredit for seat upgrades/Preferred Seat purchases.

Talked to another platinum line worker just now and he said i would get my payment back to my credit card if cancelled the flight or wanted to change flights. So not sure what to think. See mixed reviews/answers. Would hate to say throw me back in regular cabin and then not get my refund back too.
Definitely not the published/official policy (which is to get an eCredit), but some agents may just do their own thing. Who knows.
