Two passports with two different names through US - Avios ticket

Hi there.

Just double checking on this one to get advice. I'll try to explain it simply and someone can help.

Traveling to Japan from Mexico in 2 weeks. This will be via the USA on separate tickets a few days apart.
  • Ticket 1 is MEX-DFW-SFO
  • Ticket 2 is SFO-HND
  • Ticket 3 is HND-DFW-MEX

1) My stepson is Mexican and German. His name on the Mexican passport is NAME SURNAME1 SURNAME2 and on the German one (by law), just NAME - SURNAME1.

2) When we got Ticket 2 from SFO to HND about 5 months ago, he only had a Mexican passport with NAME - SURNAME 1 - SURNAME 2. This name is on the booking that was purchased through BA Avios.

3) We purchased Tickets 1 and 3 after he received his German passport, for which he has now, for the first time, been granted an ESTA. His German details are on these tickets, so I am not worried about them.

My question is whether we need to get BA to change his SFO-HND ticket from both surnames to one surname. The reason I ask is that he will "enter" the US on ESTA, but will leave the US currently with a ticket under his Mexican details. His USB1/B2 border crossing card visa (It's for Mexicans) has expired.

Is it sensible to ask BA to change the names? They already updated his Exec club account, and there are no issues with seeing the details of the two passports.

Thanks in advance for any advice
