I've previously done TWOV without issue, but does this change at all when flying a Chinese airline? For example if I fly LHR-PVG-TYO (2 hour layover) on the outbound but then TYO-PVG and a 5 day layover on the return to LHR, that's still OK?
I can't see why it wouldn't be, but I've always had a split ticket (LHR-PVG//TYO-LHR with a separate PVG-TYO one way) in the past.
Looks entirely valid to me. The operating airline has no bearing on the rules, other than outstation check in staff contracted to a Chinese airline should have more working knowledge of the rules.
