Yes, LAX rental car experience is to be avoided if at all possible (much like the airport itself). For our last LAX overnight, we stayed in Santa Monica, which is theoretically only 20 minutes away via surface streets. Except the wait for an Uber Black at 10 pm was an hour due to the back-up in the loop.

This hotel's proximity to LAX terminals is probably its best feature. With a full day to kill, staying at HR LAX and taking an Uber to somewhere walkable in West LA is a good call.
