Honestly the biggest chore in the long beach plan is getting to and from the rental car center on top of the drive. Being able to walk from the HR LAX to the terminal in the morning is huge.
If there's something special you want to do in LB then I guess go for it. Otherwise I would stay here and simply uber/lyft over to Marina del Rey or Santa Monica for lunch or dinner on your arrival day.
