Location Grand Hyatt is very close to Ritz Carlton and that location is far from my favorite in Doha because it’s not close to the Corniche. Also it’s quite far from the airport so for a one-night layover there are most likely better options elsewhere. Room Last time I was upgraded to a Grand Exec Suite and this time I was upgraded again but to the smaller Grand Suite which has a smaller balcony rather than an L-shaped balcony found in the Grand Exec Suite. The room is nice and I particularly like the hardwood floors which is key for a hotel which is not new and shiny. There is a half bathroom next to the entrance in addition to the full bathroom next to the bedroom both of which are well done. Probably the only minor negative I would have to say about the room itself is that power plugs by the bedside are not international and they are marked “for lights only” such that if you connect your phone to recharge during the night it will not work when you turn the lights off. Also there are no USB ports. Otherwise the room is spacious and comfortable. Bathroom Amenities Most people would not care much about bathroom amenities and it should not drive the choice of hotel, but I should note nonetheless that this property offers some kind of generic brand made in China. In fact the products are very similar to the no-name ones we got in Grand Hyatt Dubai last year and are among the worst I have seen in hotels of the caliber of Grand Hyatt. Dining The Club Lounge is very large, nice deco, atmosphere, and has good choices in the evening; happy hour 6-8pm is a strong point of this hotel in my opinion including excellent service with attentive staff. With all things considered this lounge compares favorably to other lounges I have visited in Doha before, such as Westin and Marriott Marquis. Perhaps the GH lounge is a bit behind the Ritz Carlton lounge but access is not free to elites unlike GH so it’s an entirely fair comparison. The number one lounge in Doha for me remains Sheraton Grand. When we were in the GH lounge in the evening they had two hot dishes, one was meat balls and the other was polenta with salsa. They also had a chicken salad with asparagus, smoked salmon, hummus, and several desserts. Alcohol is fairly limited, I only saw one white and one red wine, Cava, and some liquor. While we did not have time to have breakfast in the hotel before leaving, out of curiosity I asked if Globalists have the choice of breakfast in the restaurant and lounge, or if it’s lounge only. At this property they stick to the rules: it’s lounge only. For the Middle East I think it puts them somewhat at a competitive disadvantage. Even during our latest stay at Ritz Carlton Doha where breakfast is normally not included for elites, they gave us free breakfast in the restaurant anyway. Since Globalists have the breakfast in the lounge to begin with, I think it would not be a major issue for Grand Hyatt to give free breakfast in the restaurant as well but they are within the Hyatt rules. Wifi Wifi was ok but not the best I have come across, about 8-10 Mbps. Overall Bottom line Grand Hyatt Doha is good but there are more and more new and recent hotels opening in Doha; Grand Hyatt is not old by any means but relatively speaking it is slightly behind others. With the upcoming Park Hyatt due to open soon, it will possibly become a better choice except for people who want a lounge, although admittedly with a higher price tag than GH. As things stand now GH is in a tough spot competing with the several excellent hotels from Marriott. I enjoy the lounge and I am grateful for suite upgrades at GH, but several Marriott hotels are equally generous if not more for example with free breakfast in the restaurant.
which suite did you prefer? The larger balcony one? The photos suggest those are on the ground floor?
