Well-meaning, but long in the tooth, property
I just stayed three nights at the Sofitel New York in an Executive Suite with my wife and two children. I booked and stayed in an Executive Suite. The room was spacious (≈650 square feet) with a king and sofa beds, a sensible layout, and a bit of a view of the Chrysler Building, which was a nice touch. Otherwise, the room was showing its age - in the worn carpet and furniture, the old and undersized TV and other electronics, and the dated bathroom. It served our purpose, but was below the brand standard that I have come to expect from a Sofitel.
The staff at the hotel, despite it being near capacity during my stay, were very welcoming and professional. Also, the hotel is very well situated on 44th Street, two blocks from Bryant Park, Grand Central, and Times Square. I also used my welcome drink vouchers at the bar for a few very nice glasses of champagne. (The vouchers are good for anything up to $35, which I felt was generous on the hotel's part.)
I have read that this hotel will be undergoing a renovation, and I think this property has a lot of promise to become a very fine hotel with refreshed rooms and public spaces.
