I would just book it with points in the first place, I wouldn't expect it to be cheaper to upgrade later. I'm seeing dates where it's 33,000 Yen per night ($210 US) co-pay for club rooms over the points for a basic room. That's pretty cheap as far as Ritz Club access goes.
