As ever, the easiest way out of this, so long as your correct email address is on the booking, is to use the Finnair email link. This gives an email with a barcode on it, and a PDF, also with a barcode. This works very well indeed.

However, both the BA links gave the same error about the boarding pass not being available

I'd read about the requirement for a bar code, which is why I was concerned about not having the boarding pass as the BA issued ticketing email doesn't have a barcode.
