No. They might; they might not. It depends primarily upon two factors: how many passengers are on that particular connecting flight and whether or not they can delay departure without materially affecting arrival.

I’m not following what “shouldn’t be happening,” but I assure you that (a) they will not hold a flight indefinitely and (b) UA has no obligation to put a misconnecting passenger into a hotel unless the misconnect is their fault.

OP: I’m a risk-taker when it comes to connections, and even I wouldn’t book a 40-minute D-I connection at LAX.
