As far as hotel status benefits are concerned, I usually contact the hotel before booking with BAH to ask them what their rules are. In my experience as Hilton Diamond, they NEVER give points or nights credit but about 50% of the time will give me lounge access, free breakfast for two and an upgraded room. It's then a question of doing the sums to work out my best option. Almost always, booking direct wins for me.
