The tourist buses don't look like they make stops along the way to Alishan, and at any rate there are some motion sickness concerns with my wife.
we rented a car from a rental car place 3 mins walk from the Chiayi station. Alisan is better to self drive..we explored other areas which the buses don't get to. Plus the aboriginal food there is great! bbq wild boar!
