Again, where did youi see that requirement? That you need to "spend money" to qualify.
The terms literally say,
"2. Take at least 4 Qatar Airways flights with 12 months before tier upgrade or retention, or at least 8 Qatar Airways flights within 24 months before tier upgrade or retention."
Taking a flight is pretty unambiguous - your butt in a seat. It doesn't say, "Take at least 4 paid Qatar Airways flights..."
Where have you read or seen something that says an award flight wouldn't count?
