The most obvious trigger is just having had different accounts transfer points to a single account. Probably because the authorized user thing is a common workaround? Still think they just need to get rid of that avenue if it flags the account.
The tickets appear to still be hanging on from the JAL side, and the charge finally cleared my credit card. I really doubt they will exist by the time we're supposed to fly, though, which is making planning very stressful. I'd wanted to get hotels all lined up, but some of the cancellation policies are very strict (7-, 14-, and 30 days prior) so I'm having to make choices based on cancellation windows rather than based on where we'd prefer to stay.

I'm in agreement that if the AU transfer route is being viewed as suspicious then AmEx and their transfer partners should discontinue offering/allowing it. Had I known this would be an issue, I'd definitely have done things differently (buying the points needed to top off what was in one of our accounts rather than transferring from both might have had better results, but I had no idea I was raising any flags, I just thought I was using the program as intended).
