You cannot combine Basic Economy with non-Basic Economy on the same ticket. You can buy a one-way Basic Economy ticket in one direction, and a one-way Premium Plus ticket in the other direction, but one-way international tickets are often much more than half of the corresponding round-trip fare.
When i do a booking online, it is letting me select the first part as basic economy and the return flight as premium plus. it lets me select seats for both flights and comes up with options like premier access and lounge pass and then the payment page..
