I think it's because IHG IT is broken, and anytime you "earn" something in a year, it's valid till the end of next - so if they had renewed his Diamond on Dec 31, it would be valid till end of 2025, and as it stands, it's until end of 2026 because it was on Jan 2.
I think you could be correct as yesterday my Diamond was to the end of this year and today my RA renewal posted and the Diamond has updated to 2026.
