If this was a stand alone purchase versus a segment part of a larger trip, the standalone credit should have less / no restriction that others have refereed to.

Have you search on Google Flights and see if it links to UA, that has worked for some.

For extending the credit, the placeholder flight does not need to one you could fly, as you will be canceling after 24 hours. Just find a flight for approx the same value as the credit.
