Not necessarily. When booked sufficiently in advance, Amtrak from Princeton Junction to New York Penn Station can be very cheap:
I'm seeing Amtrak fares during
daytime hours as low as $13 from PJC.
And from New York Penn Station, one has the option of taking the Long Island Rail Road to the Jamaica JFK AirTrain terminal; from the PATH World Trade Center station in lower Manhattan, one is limited to the subway.
