I have no doubt that Iberia will at some point go over to a spend based system, either this year or next. After all they went early on spend based Avios. The terms and conditions of Iberia Plus states that just one month's notice is required of changes, so they have a bit more time time to make a decision on this if they are changing from 1 April 2025, which was already their annual reset date. However Iberia Plus has a number of historic differences from BAEC, notably the 2 year Emerald status - there was a time when most European frequent flyer members would get this - and different membership benefits (e.g. upgrade vouchers). If / when they move to a spend model I suspect Iberia will be far more careful not to upset their customer base. Their crown jewels are the Latin America / Africa routes, and the spend targets of BAC are way, way off what these markets will sustain. Comparing Iberia Plus to the USA Big 3 is unrealistic. Iberia Plus has more complex relationships with non airline partners than BAEC. The Iberia board may also note the adverse reaction to the BAC changes and that may give them cause to pause.
These are all good arguments, but I wouldn't be surprised if IB+ implemented some kind of spend-based status but with lowered thresholds for Spanish residents.
