Under the current arrangements, 35,000 tier points are needed for gold for life. Under the new arrangements 550,000 tier points are needed for gold for life - a roughly 15.71 times increase (i.e. an increase of 550/35)

On the BA website, it says:

For example:
  • Current balance – 17,500 Lifetime Tier Points
  • This will be converted to – 275,000 Lifetime Tier Points
This makes sense in that the current balance has been multiplied by the roughly 15.71 factor (or 550/35 to be precise)

However the website goes on to say:

Or , if you're already a Gold for Life Member, your Lifetime Tier Point balance will be proportionally transfered, or set to at least 550,000 tier points, whichever is higher.

Here’s an example:
  • Current balance – 50,000 Lifetime Tier Points
  • This will be converted to – 750,000 Lifetime Tier Points
Here, the previous balance has been multiplied by a factor of exactly 15. I would have expected the conversion here to be 50,000 x 550/35 = 785,714

I also don't really understand why it needs to say "set to at least 550,000 tier points, whichever is higher" as if there is a simple proportionate conversion this shouldn't be necessary.

I think the bottomline is that anyone who is currently GFL will keep it, but what's less clear to me is what their lifetime balance will actually be.

Can someone explain what I'm missing?

Thanks in advance
I think there was some initial confusion on this point and the information on conversion of lifetime tier points for those already GfL was taken down from FAQ during the day on 30 December, the information then changed to what is stated above. (GfL/GGL emails may have been delayed as a result, though I don't know this)

Based on what I initially read, I used your calculation above:
50,000 x 550/35 = 785,714

But I now think the calculation would be - you currently have 50,000 lifetime tier points which is 50% of the way to GGLfL in current programme. You therefore have 750,000 lifetime tier points in new programme which is 50% of the way GGLfL which requires 1,500,000.
