I don't view them as strictly for long haul international either. If I can get a two-segment domestic itinerary (where both segments are over 2.5 hours) to clear in advance, I'm likely using the SWU. Especially if it's a work trip.
This is true. There is some value of using a SWU on a transcon. Granted you're not in a sleeper seat, but being in F on PHL-LAX is almost as long in duration as being in J from PHL to LHR. Last Sunday's PHL- LAX was 6:28 in duration. PHL-LHR was 6:56 in duration.
