And in the case of Marriott, yes: I think that people who pay $650 in a credit card annual fee for Platinum status are "cheating." But, as I've said elsewhere: we play by the rules Marriott has set, and that's one of those rules. So, no; they're not really cheating. And it isn't worth investing any time or energy is getting upset about it.
