If the "we're sorry select another flight" page still shows the option you want, then you've hit the waitlist error with RJ. You need to call AA. If the page doesn't show your option anymore, then yes that is phantom space.
Just three weeks ago I ticketed an AMM-USA flight with the exact error being described here.
I am encountering this exact situation (the error shows but the page still displays the RJ flight); called in twice and both times the representative said she couldn’t find availability for the flight. Is there anything in particular you said to point the person you spoke to in the right direction, or is this likely to be true phantom space?
