BA must surely believe the airline will be better off as a result of these changes, otherwise why would they do it?

What are they trying to achieve? What is the problem they think this move will solve?
They will leverage the new tier point system to dish out more tier points for commercial schemes that have less to do with the underlying flight. You can see all kinds of promos being generated in the future - buy X from Partner Y and get an extra 1000 TPs. Book two Js in long haul and get an extra 5000 TPs. Gamification basically to help their revenues continue to grow even if they can't sell more seats in planes. My gut instinct though is that they've gone too aggressive, and at 20,000 TPs, it's just not worth chasing at all. The odd 1,000 here and there will not get me to 20,000, so I won't bother trying to begin with.
