It appears that 1st class is a good intermediate option. Business class is twice the price, but not a great increment in amenities. Correct?

The trip would be somewhere 10/11/12 February. How far in advance for a non-national to book? Trip.com?

And finally, I assume that I'll be staying in a tourist-friendly area of Shanghai. Upon arrival in Beijing, my intent would be to spend 24 hours in a tourist-friendly area (maybe stay at the Marriott NE again).

Any thoughts in the actual departure and arrival stations?

Many thks and best wishes for the New Year!
There is a huge difference between business class and first class on the high speed trains. First class is a decent recliner type chair but still the car will be very noisy and bustling with people. Business class is a flat bed type seat with much fewer people in the car and usually much quieter cabin.

In Beijing I'd stay at Hilton or Westin Chaoyang after arrival rather than around the station area.
