If I were to guess, the bigger picture is that LHR will never get a third runway, BA management is now all too aware the only way to increase profits beyond cuts which can’t go much further is therefore to increase revenue from existing slots. This means pivoting towards an increasing percentage of longhaul US flights at the expense of domestic and lower margin European routes that US passengers don’t use.
BA clearly doesn’t want intra-Europe or domestic UK passengers, they want passengers willing to pay for TATL flights in premium cabins. This just presages yet further Americanisation of BA to me.
On top of that it's going to be trying to increase the margin per passenger. That means gutting a lot of people who are on the bubble for status. Quite frankly, most people reading this board are people who like to go out of their way for the best deal possible. Well, that means a seat not taken up by someone from Canary Wharf or Wall Street traveling on business that doesn't give a fig about if their R/T J seat cost 3k or 4k.
